People often ask, “what do you mean a Gateway–this pain I feel is just something I would like to fix, get rid of and is only an obstacle to my happiness”.

Without discounting the pain and desire to heal, as this implies our inherent health, always seeking its balance, the pain has the opportunity to become the antithesis of a block to health, and the possibility toward the Gateway of our Re-membering ourselves; the portal through which we can journey to what is essentially right and good in us. A Gateway implies an opening through which we can enter and arrive in some new territory. The company name is inspired by the understanding that there is possibility for growth and healing in all circumstances. Whatever is placed before us can become the Gateway to our next stage of evolution and further understanding and wisdom, dependent upon how we choose to relate to whatever arrives.

The original company began as Present Centered Psychotherapy, L.L.C., utilizing presence of the therapist and focus of the client’s present experience as indicators of any un-integrated past. Within this work , Diane began to specialize in the field of Cancer and psychotherapy after a personal journey with both Colon and Uterine cancer. She became acutely aware of the areas of healing she needed to address when faced with cancer and the full meeting of an immediacy to mortality, and discovered healing beyond just her Cancer; her cancer became her Gateway toward integration of parts of her emotional, psychological, relational, and spiritual aspects of her life. Hence, she created a six week workshop “Healing Beyond Cancer” under the name “Cancer as a Gateway”. As time went by, it became apparent that it did not matter which circumstances were placed in a person’s path, that they all became either a gateway to growth, or a blockage to the movement of healing. From this, “Your Gateway to Healing™” was born. Allowing present symptoms to point toward un-integrated experiences of the past, moving a person along the journey of evolution, learning how to approach the pain to discover its wisdom.

Diane Renz, M.A., L.P.C., psychotherapist in private practice, trained in Contemplative, Transpersonal, and Somatic psychology, specializing in Anxiety, Trauma, Loss, Catastrophic Illness, and Eating Disorders, working with Couples, Individuals, and Groups. Her work is the culmination of both personal and professional study. She utilizes her own personal journey through trauma, cancer, and loss, exploring an integrative path to healing that includes body, mind, and spirit. It is through her experience that she has come to know the truth, that it is not the particular circumstance put in front of us, but how we choose to relate to it that determines if we will suffer, or turn pain into possibility. This attitude can be cultivated and is at the heart of her work.

Her current focus is on anxiety, as she has found, that regardless of the presenting issues, at the base of many negative behaviors is an avoidance of anxiety. She is passionate about empowering others to utilize their potential to re-inform their thoughts, beliefs, emotions, and their very nervous systems to change the structure of their brains. She currently studies with Dr Dan Siegel in the field of neuroscience relative to the emerging understanding of neural plasticity, and particularly, how the quality of a repeated focus of attention, found within Mindfulness and Somatic Awareness practices, can lead to positive outcomes in emotional states and enhanced interrelatedness. She integrates her current studies with the many teachers she has been blessed to learn from directly over the past 30 years of her formal and informal education, some of which include, prominent teachers in the field of Mindfulness, Somatic psychology, Trauma resolution, and the field of Integrative medicine, such as, Thich Nhat Hanh, Pema Chodron, Joko Beck, Jon Kabat Zinn in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, Bessel Van der Kolk, Pat Ogden, Peter Levine, Dr Andrew Weil.

Diane remains progressive in her work and life’s healing, seeking and learning from varied sources, with the understanding that healing is integrative and not found in one view, theory, or model, but must include all aspects of a life and be as varied as one individual’s one moment of experience, thereby tailoring therapy to the particular individual versus asking the individual to fit into a fixed agenda for healing. The final expert is within the individual’s use of his/her life as an ongoing experiment and study. Life and the individual is an emergent process asking us to move with it. Diane’s view of a patient’s inherent health guides her work. Each symptom becomes opportunity for healing; healing comes in movement, illness in stagnation. Exploration of, and creating new relationship to, Sensations, Images, Thoughts, and Emotions (SITE), leads to new, more integrative behaviors, and to a return to wholeness, creating relationship to Self and Other, moving from exile to connection. Her experience has proven that your pain can become Your Gateway to Healing.
